Media-Whore D'Oeuvres

"BEVERLY Hills Pop Eddie Murphy has ended his bitter legal battle with Mel B by agreeing a multi-million pound support package for their child. The settlement will see Murphy shell out (USD: $51,442) A MONTH until daughter Iris Angel turns 18 — a total of around (USD: $10.2 million). We can also reveal that Eddie has finally agreed to see his 20-month-old child. Spice Girl Mel and the Hollywood actor have spent 15 months warring in Los Angeles courts. She has been determined to force him to play a part in his child’s life." (Newsoftheworld)

"Ooo, the rumors are true. MSNBC character and PR firm owner Dan Abrams is dating permasquint actress Renee Zellweger. There's photographic evidence! INF has new pictures of the smartly-dressed couple strolling around Manhattan and buying some wine last week. They're both dressed casually—he in a long coat and baseball cap, she in leggings and funny spectacles—and they look the picture of moneyed ease." (Gawker)

"My heart wants Mickey because of his showbiz tale of redemption. But my head thinks Sean will pull it out for Best Actor because he won SAG, the biggest voting bloc among Academy members. Then again, Mickey won the Golden Globe and now the BAFTA. (And then there's dark horse Frank Langella.) So who should win? Who will win?" (Deadlinehollywooddaily)

"Bill Gates, as you might have heard, released what was characterized in various accounts as a 'swarm' of mosquitoes as the TED Conference in a room filled with the digerati. 'That's it,' tweeted eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, 'I am not sitting up front anymore.' And conferences are usually such dull affairs. 'Malaria is spread by mosquitoes,' Gates told the crowd as he slyly opened the jar onstage. 'I brought some. Here I'll let them roam around. There is no reason only poor people should be infected.' And then he loosed the blood suckers into the digitally forward audience. Gates mischievously waited about a minute before assuring the crowd that the insects were malaria-free." (AWEARNESS)

" .. Also last Thursday evening, a cold cold night in New York, over at Time Life in the Henry Luce Conference Center, the U.S. Foundation for Atlantic College in Wales UK held its 4th annual UWC Speakers Series. The speaker was Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time Magazine. The title of the lecture was:'Mandela and Obama, a discussion of their transformative leadership.' .. He talked especially about both men’s steady temperament, recalling a time when he interviewed president Obama right after he had lost the New Hampshire primary and how he seemed calmer than ever at the end of a hectic and disappointing day. When he got on his plane, at 9 o’clock at night, he loosened his tie, put his feet up and said to Rick, 'So, how is it going?' With a smile on his face ..." (NYSocialDiary)

"The Anglo-Saxon model of supervision and regulation of the financial system has failed, Nouriel Roubini, chairman of RGE Monitor and professor of economics at New York University, told the Financial Times on Monday. Answering questions from FT.com readers, Prof Roubini, who is widely credited with having predicted the current financial crisis, said the supervisory system 'relied on self-regulation that, in effect, meant no regulation; on market discipline that does not exist when there is euphoria and irrational exuberance; on internal risk management models that fail because – as a former chief executive of Citi put it – when the music is playing you gotta stand up and dance.'" "NOT every politician in the news is movie material. Disgraced former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is making the media rounds after being booted for discussing the possibility of selling President Obama's old Senate seat for cash - but he's persona non grata at the big talent agencies. Endeavor TV packaging agent/partner Marc Korman, who hails from Illinois and is pals with Blagojevich, was planning on having a lunch with the mop-topped pol. But when Endeavor head Ari Emanuel found out, he put the kibosh on it, saying, 'You cannot do it. You're not going to have lunch with this [bleep]ing guy. Not a chance.' Ari is the brother of Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel - who locked horns with Blago about who would succeed Obama as the junior senator from Illinois. A rep for Endeavor declined to comment." "Ailing Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has returned to the Washington area and is waiting to cast a potentially decisive vote to advance the Democratic majority’s economic stimulus package, according to several Democratic senators. Kennedy, 76, arrived on Friday from Florida, where he had been recuperating since suffering a seizure during an Inauguration Day luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Kennedy is battling a malignant brain tumor. The White House helped to arrange for Kennedy’s return to Washington, one senator said. Kennedy did not return to the Capitol on Friday, according to several senators, but placed a call to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev. 'He told Harry Reid , Kennedy reporting for duty, West Virginia Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV said Saturday.' Kennedy aides did not return telephone calls or e-mails seeking comment on the senator’s plans for the key vote or his arrangements for returning to and staying in the Washington area this weekend. If he takes part in an expected Feb. 9 vote to limit debate on a compromise stimulus amendment hammered out Friday, it will be the first vote Kennedy has cast since Nov. 20, when he cast a procedural vote in favor of a bill to extend unemployment insurance (PL 110-449) — and only his second Senate vote since he was diagnosed with the brain tumor in June." "A Barbie fashion show just days away...A M.A.C collection inspired by Hello Kitty...it appears childhood icons are abounding this season. Last night at John Demsey and Stephen Gan's M.A.C and V fĂȘte, the Sanrio kitty was all grown up. Shirtless model men in Hello Kitty heads served drinks (avec the hard stuff!) to guests, who gathered around a center display of Hello Kitty-inspired looks by designers from ThreeAsFour to HervĂ© Leger to Marchesa .. While chicettes from Lindsay Price to Ciara (and even an appearance by the new Sean Avery, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker-cum-ELLE intern Stewart Bradley) checked out the looks, Catherine Malandrino posed in front of her ruffled creation. 'It's shocking pink, because I love the idea that Hello Kitty has grown up,' she said. 'She's not a little girl anymore.'" (Fashionweekdaily)

"The Grammys last night were actually pretty fun! Notable moments included Justin Timberlake's duet with T.I.; Radiohead performing with the marching band; Katy Perry descending from the ceiling atop a banana; Stevie Wonder singing with the Jonas Brothers (!!); even Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift's little ballad was sort of cute. In any case, the highlight of the evening for us was definitely the 'Rap Pack' (T.I., Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye West and an about-to-pop M.I.A.) doing 'Swagga Like Us.'" (Papermag)

"Sunday in Connecticut. And Westchester. Also a beautiful day. With hundreds of protestors led by an organization called Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) marched by the houses of Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack and Greenwich Finance CEO William Frey among others. The march was part of what the NACA called a 'Predator’s Tour.' NACA also is in the business of helping restructure morgages. From the video footage, the band of protestors up there in Greenwich and Rye certainly didn’t resemble the sans-culotte of Louis XVI’s day. The Ralph Lauren and J. Crew version maybe. Bright yellow pullovers, parkas and buttondowns, they could have been out on along the Promenade in Carl Schurz Park. If they were in Manhattan." (NYSocialDiary)

"On Thursday, the announcement that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer launched immediate speculation of Obama’s coming Supreme Court picks. One of Washington’s favorite parlor games — name that nominee—is already in full swing. But it may be premature. The feisty Ginsburg, 75 years old, has repeatedly signaled her intention to remain on the court for as long as she can continue to perform her duties, and many close to her suggest that an early withdrawal is not in the cards .. A review of Obama’s picks for legal-policy posts reveals some recurring themes. Whereas the Bush administration put a premium on political fidelity in appointees, looking for membership in the Federalist Society, time spent in the trenches in political campaigns, and campaign contributions, the Obama selections seem largely culled on the basis of their intellectual firepower. Obama, a part-time law-school professor at the University of Chicago, puts a lot of emphasis on finding candidates who are bright and well-grounded in legal policy issues. Many have an academic background, but he is especially interested in academics with some measure of engagement in social issues." (TheDailyBeast)

"Brian McNamee says he couldn't risk lying to federal agents when they asked him about Roger Clemens and performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee, the pitcher's former trainer, spoke on The Howard Stern Show on Monday as a federal grand jury in Washington looks into whether Clemens lied to Congress. 'You just think of circumstances,' McNamee said. 'It wasn't worth that risk of that being over my head for six years — that's the term they have to investigate you and convene a grand jury.' ... He said he had work opportunities but it's difficult to follow through because of all the publicity. 'You get caught up in a culture,' he said. 'I made a mistake. I wouldn't do it again. It was stupid. I never made money off it.' McNamee said he was trying to keep a low profile, though he conceded the Stern interview contradicted that." (AP)
